This is especially true if you find yourself suddenly becoming more forgetful than usual. If you’re suddenly struggling with your memory or having trouble developing strong memories, here are some underlying issues that might be causing the problem:

  • Lack of sleep: This is a pretty basic problem that nevertheless affects millions of people. If you aren’t getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night – depending on how much your body needs – then you’re not going to learn how to remember better. Your brain doesn’t function as well when you aren’t getting enough sleep, so just by making sleep a priority, you’ll find that your memory improves.
  • Poor nutrition: Another common problem when it comes to memory issues is poor nutrition. If you aren’t feeding your body – and your brain! – what it needs to function properly, you won’t be able to build neuronal connections that you need to make new memories. A healthy diet based on fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources, whole grains, and a few servings a day of healthy fats can help boost your memory like almost nothing else can!
  • Lack of attention: Sometimes memory problems aren’t problems with the memory, but are rather problems with the attention. You see, in order for your brain to form good memories that are easy to recall, you have to actually pay attention. Sometimes attention problems are just due to environment, but sometimes there can be an underlying imbalance in brain chemistry that makes paying attention difficult. If you think you have a clinical attention issue, talk to a doctor about what you can do to fix it.
  • Other brain-related problems: If you experience a sudden, sharp decline in memory, it’s always a good idea to consult a doctor to talk about your symptoms, as your memory loss could be related to a serious degenerative condition of the brain that may still be treatable!

You don’t necessarily have to visualize strange things for this to work, but just turning information into pictures is really helpful.
  • Writing it down: This is one of the most basic ways of how to remember better. Just the act of writing a piece of information down can help increase your memory of that information, so you’ll be better able to recall it in the future.
